Chris Guenther
Research Director

Economic, social and environmental systems are more dynamic and interrelated than ever. Sustainability is fundamentally about how well we harness and create value from – rather than become victims of – that interplay.

Based in the San Francisco Bay Area and working from our Oakland office, Chris leads SustainAbility’s ongoing research program and contributes particularly to the firm’s thinking about corporate strategy and innovation, branding and urbanization. Most recently, he co-authored the SustainAbility report Citystates: How Cities Are Vital to the Future of Sustainability and Changing Tack: Extending Corporate Leadership on Sustainable Development (the final report of SustainAbility and GlobeScan’s collaborative project, The Regeneration Roadmap).

Over the last decade, Chris’s consulting work has crossed the energy, ICT, food, consumer goods and transportation sectors, and has encompassed themes including the business case for sustainability, strategy, marketing, stakeholder engagement and communications. His clients have included American Electric Power, Cisco Systems, Darden Restaurants, Ford Motor Company, PG&E, Shell, Starbucks, The Walt Disney Company and others.

Prior to joining SustainAbility, Chris wove through roles in public-interest campaigning, communications, and IT strategy and consulting. He holds a BA in English from Vassar College and MBA and MS degrees from the University of Michigan’s Erb Institute for Global Sustainable Enterprise.
