Chris Guenther
Research Director

Economic, social and environmental systems are more dynamic and interrelated than ever. Sustainability is fundamentally about how well we harness and create value from – rather than become victims of – that interplay.

Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Chris leads SustainAbility’s think tank activities, including research and advocacy projects, trends tracking and related partnerships. He also contributes directly to the firm’s thinking about corporate sustainability strategy and innovation, urban sustainability and long-term market transformation.

Most recently, he has co-authored reports including Changing Tack: Extending Corporate Leadership on Sustainable Development (the final report of SustainAbility and GlobeScan’s collaborative project, The Regeneration Roadmap) and Citystates II: The Case for Corporate Leadership in Urban Sustainability.

Chris is also an experienced strategy consultant, facilitator and trusted advisor to leading companies in the energy, ICT, food, consumer goods and transportation industries. Over the last decade, his consulting work has encompassed themes including the business case for sustainability, strategy, goal-setting, marketing & communications, transparency, stakeholder engagement and multi-stakeholder collaboration. His key clients have included American Electric Power, Cisco Systems, Darden Restaurants, Ford Motor Company, Pacific Gas & Electric, Shell, Starbucks, The Walt Disney Company and others.

Prior to joining SustainAbility, Chris held numerous positions spanning social and environmental campaign work, communications, graphic design and IT administration. He holds a BA in English from Vassar College and MBA and MS degrees from the University of Michigan’s Erb Institute for Global Sustainable Enterprise.
