The Biodiversity Challenge Revisited
A Review of the Latest Research and Implications for Business
As we near the end of 2010 and the International Year of Biodiversity, some businesses are gradually awakening to growing risks and new opportunities as the protection of species and genetic diversity prove more and more critical to global supply chains. However, too many still assume that biodiversity will be adequately managed by governments alone. As the evidence of biodiversity erosion and government failure continue to mount in many parts of the world, business shouldn’t be surprised to see this issue forcing its way higher on the sustainability agenda.
We first described ‘The Biodiversity Challenge for Business’ in an article on this site late last year. Now, these slides – derived from a webinar presented to members of SustainAbility’s Engaging Stakeholders Program in October 2010 – explore results from the recent The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) study and frame the rapidly evolving implications for business.
