• The 1990s saw increasing demand for companies to operate in an environmentally and socially responsible manner – accompanied by a proliferation of voluntary standards, codes and principles aimed at guiding companies towards the objective of sustainable development. Business appreciates clear rules, but the plethora of standards can be confusing. So which are most appropriate? Which are most legitimate? And which are likely to have the greatest sustainability impact?
