Neither here nor there
The practice of ‘offshoring’ – transfer of jobs from high-cost to low-cost countries – has emerged as a hot issue in recent months, especially in the US and UK. While migration of jobs is not new, its impact on the service sector – both in terms of scale and public debate – is quite recent. As a steady stream of companies announces new offshore ventures amid the anger and concerns of unions, employees, communities and consumers, the question is: can offshoring be compatible with corporate responsibility?
