China is a populous country of diverse cultures and regions undergoing monumental change. The rate of economic growth, urbanisation and industrial development is bringing unprecedented forces to bear on the country’s infrastructure, society and environment. As levels of trade, exchange reserves and foreign direct investment soar, the country is also confronted by polarising inequalities of wealth and opportunity, a schism between rural and urban development, and environmental degradation of national and global significance.
