Need
Holcim actively pursues the goal of sustainable development. In 2000, Holcim asked us to assess their progress to date and to determine strategic priorities that would further embed sustainability in its core businesses.

Work
Provided guidance and constructive challenge on all aspects of Holcim’s sustainability strategy. Developed ‘roadmap’. This included performance milestones covering internal governance and policies, systems, products and services. Advised on sustainability reporting and stakeholder engagement.

Approach
We supported the Holcim team in our role as facilitators and sparring partners and being bringing the outside into the organisation. This included providing access to our research base and comparative industry benchmarks.

Results & Impact
One of our key successes is that we have helped Holcim prioritize and implement new policies and practices. Holcim has made considerable progress in continuously embedding sustainability throughout its operations, and is respected externally for doing so. The business case has strengthened over time. Comprehensive sustainability reporting has been established and systematic stakeholder engagement initiated.

Insights
The cement industry with its considerable environmental footprint has been pro-active in tackling global sustainability issues. The current phase is dominated by implementation of newly established principles throughout the various global groups. Sustainability has become one more competitive field.
